History of Knox Pruden United Church

Knox has the distinction of beginning with a different name in a different part of the city. In 1889 it was St. Andrews” Presbyterian Church on the corner of Brodie and Donald Streets across from City Hall in Fort William.

In 1908 St. Andrews’ built a new church and this building was used as a Sunday School. Some years later St. Andrews’ congregation decided to open a new church in the East End of the city and so this building was moved by teams of horses to the corner of Pruden and McMurray Streets. February 1914 saw the opening of Knox Presbyterian Church and remained so till 1925 when the congregation of Knox decided to leave the Presbyterian Church and become Knox United.

Through the years Knox has had many dedicated Ministers and lay people involved in the work of Knox. At the present time our minister is Doreen Lankshear-Smith.

Knox United Church Mission Statement sums up the work of our church.
"A Community of thoughtful and caring people, Called to worship and praise God in the name of Jesus, our Christ, Compelled to love and serve others by the power of the Holy Spirit."

At this juncture Knox United seeks to create a vibrant community which encourages participation from peoples of all ages and walks of life, while honouring the fundamental strengths that have made it a formidable Christian presence in the South Core - with strong outreach and pastoral care.
